Abstract
There is a growing awareness about the significance of appropriate diets for health in the world today. This has led to an increased demand for supplementary and proprietary foods as well. Prebiotics and probiotics, components of the food or incorporated into the food can yield health benefits. This paper lays emphasis on the prebiotics, their sources and the common prebiotics available along with the mechanisms and the health benefits of the same. It also tracks the criteria for the food being classified as a prebiotic and the advances in combinations of prebiotics and probiotics forming synbiotics.Downloads
